Conservation Planning Symposium

Almost 260 people from WA and other states attended a two day conservation planning conference organised by the Southwest Australia Ecoregion Initiative (SWAEI) at the Perth Convention Centre in September 2006.

The SWAEI is developing a conservation strategy for the Southwest Australia Ecoregion and using input from a wide variety of organisations and individuals. The Initiative’s Working Group organised the Conservation Planning Symposium to focus some of this input. The Symposium presented a range of biodiversity conservation planning approaches and tools to contribute towards this objective and provide information to individuals and organisations with interests in conservation planning approaches.

The Symposium also allowed the Initiative to make an informed decision about approaches and tools to be utilised in developing a biodiversity conservation planning strategy for Southwest Australia.

Organisers and Sponsors
The Initiative’s Working Group (jointly chaired by WWF-Australia and the WA Department of Environment and Conservation) organised the Conservation Planning Symposium.

The Symposium was made possible through the generous support of the Australian Government, Department of Environment and Conservation, Exchange, State NRM Office of WA, The Nature Conservancy, Water Corporation and WWF-Australia.

Conservation Planning Symposium Program

The Symposium brought together internationally recognised conservation planners, researchers, academics and others working in large-scale conservation planning with local conservation land managers, planners and practitioners. Speakers presented information on conservation planning approaches and tools utilised in various contexts and geographies, together with large-scale conservation planning issues relevant to some of the biodiversity assets of the Southwest Australia Ecoregion. The program and abstracts booklet can be downloaded from this webpage. Symposium presenters included internationally recognised conservation planners such as Bob Pressey, Jonathan Higgins, Kerrie Wilson and Dan Faith, and West Australian experts such as Richard Hobbs, Greg Keighery and Stuart Halse.
